The Losar festival has just been celebrated in Spiti, this is the Tibetan New Year festival which is held in November so that the royal families of Ladak and Spiti can be together before the high mountain passes close for the winter. This year has been very frugal for the inhabitants of the Spiti Valley due to the failure of the pea harvest, their one and only cash crop. Unfortunately it will be a hard winter for the people of the Valley.
We have knitters all over the British Isles who are making the most of the cold evenings sitting by the fire to make sweaters for the children of the Spiti Valley. We are currently exploring ways of transporting these lovely garments to India before the worst of the winter sets in. If anyone has any suggestions as to how to do this economically please contact joanswinnerton@gmail.com.
All of us here at Spiti Projects would like to thank everyone who has so kindly donated, their time, energy and money to the charity throughout this past year. We look forward to seeing you at our next fundraiser in 2011. Wishing you all a prosperous and warm Christmas and New Year.
Best wishes Joan
